He played college football at the University of Cincinnati. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a three-time first-team All-Pro selection. He holds the NFL record for most consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards receiving by a tight end (6), and the record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season (1,416). Named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
