Jyoti Basu was an Indian politician and one of the most prominent leaders of Communist movement in India. He served as the 6th and longest serving Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000. He was one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a member of the Polit Bureau of the party since its inception in 1964 till 2008. In the political career of Basu spanning over seven decades, he was noted to have been the longest serving chief minister in an elected democracy, at the time of his resignation.
